If you’re on Mounjaro, you’ll know the strangest part isn’t the weekly injection. It’s standing in the kitchen at seven in the evening, knowing you should eat, and feeling absolutely nothing. That quiet appetite is the medicine doing its job, but it makes one thing much harder: getting enough protein. These nine high protein Mounjaro meals are the ones I keep coming back to. They’re small, gentle on a sensitive stomach, and built so that every mouthful counts.
As a pharmacist, the question I hear most from people starting tirzepatide isn’t about the dose or the pen. It’s “what am I actually supposed to eat now?” When you can only manage half a plate, what goes on that plate matters far more than it used to. So rather than another list of generic “healthy recipes”, I’ve put together meals that are protein-first, realistic for a normal UK supermarket shop, and easy to face on the days you feel a bit queasy.
Why Protein Matters So Much on Mounjaro
According to the NHS guide to tirzepatide, Mounjaro is a GLP-1/GIP agonist that works by reducing your appetite and helping you feel fuller for longer. That’s exactly why it helps with weight loss, and exactly why protein can quietly slip. Eat less food overall and, unless you plan for it, you eat less protein too. That’s the whole reason high protein Mounjaro meals need a little more thought than ordinary healthy eating.
This matters because not all the weight you lose is fat. Some of it can come from muscle. A joint clinical advisory from four major US obesity and nutrition organisations, Nutritional Priorities to Support GLP-1 Therapy for Obesity, lists adequate protein intake alongside strength training as one of its key priorities for preserving lean mass in people taking these medicines.
Muscle is what keeps you strong, steady on your feet and able to do the things you enjoy. It also plays a part in how you feel once your treatment ends. Protein supports your skin, nails and hair too, which is one reason I always mention it when people ask me about hair loss on Mounjaro. If you want the fuller picture on muscle, my post on whether GLP-1s cause muscle loss goes into more detail.
How Much Protein Should Each Meal Have?
Your ideal daily protein target depends on your body size, age, kidney health and activity level, so it’s worth confirming a number with your prescriber or a registered dietitian. As a practical starting point, many dietitians suggest aiming for roughly 20 to 30 grams of protein at each meal. That’s far easier to reach when the meal is designed around protein from the start, rather than protein being an afterthought on the side. That’s the principle behind all the high protein Mounjaro meals below.
Every recipe below lists an approximate protein figure per portion. These are estimates based on typical UK supermarket products, so check your own labels if you’re tracking closely.
9 High Protein Mounjaro Meals (Small Portions, Big Protein)
I’ve kept the portions deliberately modest. On Mounjaro, a huge plate of food isn’t a sign of success; it’s usually a recipe for feeling sick. These high protein Mounjaro meals are meant to be finished comfortably, not forced down.
1. Greek Yoghurt Berry Pot (approx. 25g protein)
Spoon 200g of 0% fat Greek yoghurt into a bowl or jar. Top with a handful of raspberries or blueberries, one teaspoon of chia seeds and a tablespoon of high-protein granola. That’s it.
Why it works: it’s cold, there’s no cooking smell, and it takes two minutes. On nausea days, cold food is often far easier to face than anything warm. If breakfast is your hardest meal, I’ve got more ideas in my quick breakfast ideas on Mounjaro post.
2. Smoked Salmon and Cottage Cheese on Rye (approx. 26g protein)
Toast one slice of dark rye bread. Spread over 100g of cottage cheese, then layer 60g of smoked salmon on top. Finish with black pepper, a squeeze of lemon and a few slices of cucumber.
Why it works: it feels like a proper meal but it’s small. The cottage cheese and salmon do all the heavy lifting, and one slice of rye adds fibre without filling you up before you’ve got the protein in.
3. Spinach and Feta Egg Muffins (approx. 20g protein per 2 muffins)
Whisk six eggs with 150ml of liquid egg whites. Stir in a large handful of chopped spinach, 60g of crumbled feta and a few chopped cherry tomatoes. Pour into a greased six-hole muffin tin and bake at 180°C (160°C fan) for about 20 minutes, until set. Makes six.
Why it works: batch cooking is your best friend on this medication. When your appetite is low, you won’t want to cook, so having protein ready in the fridge means you’ll actually eat it. They keep for three days and can be eaten warm or cold, and they’re one of the easiest high protein Mounjaro meals to grab on the way out of the door.
4. Chicken and Red Lentil Soup (approx. 30g protein)
Soften one chopped onion, one carrot and a garlic clove in a little olive oil. Add 75g of red lentils and 700ml of low-salt chicken stock, then simmer for 20 minutes. Stir in 200g of shredded cooked chicken and warm through. Blend half if you prefer it smoother. Serves two.
Why it works: soup is one of the easiest ways to get protein and fluid in together, which helps if constipation has become an issue. You can sip it slowly from a mug rather than facing a full bowl.
5. Tuna and Butter Bean Salad (approx. 30g protein)
Drain one tin of tuna in spring water and half a tin of butter beans. Mix with finely chopped red onion, cherry tomatoes, cucumber and a handful of rocket. Dress with lemon juice, a teaspoon of olive oil and a pinch of dried oregano.
Why it works: it’s a store-cupboard lunch that travels well in a lunchbox. The beans add fibre and a little extra protein, and the sharp lemon dressing tends to sit better than creamy sauces. Of all the high protein Mounjaro meals on this list, this is the one I make most often on busy days.
6. Prawn and Edamame Stir-Fry (approx. 28g protein)
Stir-fry 120g of raw king prawns in a teaspoon of sesame oil with grated ginger and garlic. Add 75g of frozen edamame beans, a handful of sliced peppers and some pak choi. Finish with a splash of reduced-salt soy sauce. Serve with two tablespoons of cooked rice, or skip it if you’re full.
Why it works: prawns are lean, quick and light on the stomach, and edamame is one of the best plant protein sources in the freezer aisle. The whole thing is on the table in ten minutes.

7. Turkey Chilli with Kidney Beans (approx. 30g protein)
Brown 500g of lean turkey mince with one chopped onion and two garlic cloves. Add a tin of chopped tomatoes, one drained tin of kidney beans, a teaspoon each of cumin and smoked paprika, and a pinch of chilli if you can tolerate it. Simmer for 25 minutes. Serves four. Top each portion with a spoonful of Greek yoghurt instead of soured cream.
Why it works: it freezes brilliantly, so one cook gives you four ready meals. If spice upsets your stomach at the moment, leave the chilli out completely; the cumin and paprika still give plenty of flavour.
8. Baked Salmon with Herby Skyr and New Potatoes (approx. 30g protein)
Bake a 120g salmon fillet at 200°C (180°C fan) for 12 to 15 minutes. Meanwhile, mix 50g of skyr with chopped dill, lemon zest and a little grated garlic. Serve the salmon with the sauce, green beans and three or four small new potatoes.
Why it works: oily fish gives you protein alongside omega-3 fats, and swapping a creamy sauce for skyr adds protein rather than just calories. Eat the salmon first and treat the potatoes as optional.
9. Chocolate Skyr Pot (approx. 18g protein, or 28g with whey)
Stir one teaspoon of unsweetened cocoa powder and a drop of vanilla into 150g of plain skyr. Sweeten lightly if you like, then top with a few sliced strawberries and a teaspoon of peanut butter. For a bigger protein boost, whisk in half a scoop of chocolate whey protein.
Why it works: many people notice their sweet cravings fade on Mounjaro, but when you do want something sweet, this satisfies it without undoing your protein effort for the day. It also doubles as a quick snack.
Tips for Eating Protein When Your Appetite Disappears
Having good recipes is only half the job. These habits make high protein Mounjaro meals much easier to stick to week after week:
- Eat your protein first. Start every meal with the chicken, fish, eggs or yoghurt. If you fill up halfway through, at least the most important part is done.
- Use a smaller plate. A side plate makes a modest portion look like a proper meal, and it stops you feeling defeated by food you can’t finish.
- Batch cook on your good days. Appetite often dips most in the day or two after your injection, so cook when you feel well and freeze portions for later.
- Keep protein snacks within reach. Boiled eggs, cheese portions, edamame, cooked chicken pieces and single-serve yoghurts all count.
- Sip water between meals, not during. Drinking a lot with food can make you feel full before you’ve eaten your protein.
- Pair protein with movement. Protein on its own isn’t enough to protect muscle. Some form of resistance or strength exercise, even bodyweight moves at home, gives it something to work with.
When to Speak to Your Prescriber
Feeling a little full or mildly queasy is common, especially after a dose increase. But if you can’t keep fluids down, you’re vomiting repeatedly, you have severe or persistent tummy pain, or you’re struggling to eat anything at all for several days, contact your prescriber or call NHS 111. Don’t wait it out. Low food intake isn’t something to push through on your own, and your dose or plan may need adjusting.
The Bottom Line
Mounjaro takes care of the appetite side of things. What you put on your plate is still up to you, and protein is the part that most deserves your attention. You don’t need complicated recipes or expensive supplements. You need a handful of reliable high protein Mounjaro meals you can make without thinking, in portions you can actually finish.
If you’re not sure where to begin, pick two or three high protein Mounjaro meals from this list to start with, batch cook one of them this weekend, and build from there. Small, protein-first meals, eaten consistently, will serve you far better than one perfect day followed by a week of crackers and toast.
