This post will explain how Vitamin C can benefit the skin and how you can take advantage of it.
So what actually is the hype behind vitamin C in skincare and do we actually need it? The answer to that is YES!
You may have heard of vitamin C being referred to as an anti-oxidant, what does this mean?
So, we are exposed to pollutants on a daily basis such as pollution, smoking, and harmful solar radiation, these produce something called free radicals which is basically a little demon that causes skin problems such as dark spots (hyperpigmentation), sun burn, signs of ageing and skin cancer.
This is where our little super hero Vitamin C steps in.
1. Counteracts Oxidative Stress
Vitamin C act by neutralising the nasty free radicals and therefore limiting the formation of reactive oxygen species which cause skin issues including skin cancer.
2.Boosts collagen
Collagen is a building block of our skin and as a natural part of the aging process it stops producing and decreases (from around the age of 25). Vitamin C is a vital part of the formation of collagen and the strengthening of it’s fibres.
A lack of it has been shown to impair the production of collagen, an example of this is a disease called scurvy! ( not great for your glow game at all)
Apart from collagen, it inhibits an enzyme called Elastin, Elastin is in charge of breaking down elastic fibres in the skin that leads to signs of aging such as fine line and wrinkles
3.Acts as an Anti-inflammatory
Lab studies have shown that vitamin C inhibits activation of the inflammation this can help with redness and puffiness and basically help to calm down the skin.
4.Is amazing for hyper-pigmentation (dark patches or spots)
Vitamin C also plays a role as an anti-pigmentation agent. It interacts with the enzyme that produces melanin and therefore can be used in anti-pigmentation treatment
In short do not let your skin care routine and diet go without this little miracle if you want glowing, healthy and younger looking skin!
